This newly created position will assist the Director of Communications in managing the Foundation’s communication efforts, digital strategy and branded campaigns. The Associate Director works in partnership with the communication and grantmaking teams to prioritize and identify opportunities to utilize strategic communications to advance the Foundation’s grantmaking goals. In addition, this role supports and contributes to the development of communications strategies to amplify the Foundation’s work and oversees project timelines and deadlines.
The mission of the Marguerite Casey Foundation is to help low-income families strengthen their voice and mobilize their communities in order to achieve a more just and equitable society for all. Strong, sustainable community-based organizations are essential to this work and the reason why most of the Foundation's grantmaking comes in the form of general support. The Foundation supports organizations that focus on building a movement of poor and low-income families advocating on their own behalf to improve the social and economic well-being of families.
The Associate Director of Communications will join a small, dynamic and collaborative communication team that works in partnership with grantmaking team to develop and execute communication strategy that advances the work of the foundation and its grantees.
This position reports to the Director of Communications.
• Oversee day-to-day operations of specific year-round communications programs
• Assist Director of Communications in implementing the Foundation’s strategic communications plan to support the organization's mission, goals and objectives
• Build and foster collaborative relationships with other departments within the foundation to stay informed and abreast of the foundation’s grantmaking efforts and initiatives
• Identify opportunities to support organizational initiatives and develop communications materials and programs to promote and publicize these activities
• Facilitate media training sessions
• Respond to media requests for information and facilitate media interviews with the president and senior staff
• Oversee planning of all communications activities. Specific responsibilities include establishing production timetable, reviewing materials, responding to media inquiries, and overseeing distribution of materials to media
• Oversee development of news releases, news materials, fact sheets and talking points for publicity of the organization's programs
• Serve as editor for communications materials including news releases, news materials and online content
• Establish and oversee departmental system for monitoring and maintaining archiving press clippings
• Oversee daily transfer and production of electronic clips on the Intranet
• Prepare monthly summary reports
• Respond to public requests for information from grantees, philanthropic partners, advocacy groups and other organizations
• Build relationships with professional counterparts in other foundations and community organizations through organizational initiatives and jointly-sponsored communication campaigns and projects
• Support director in developing and overseeing annual budget
• Manage the Director of Communications calendar
• Identify and oversee communications consultants, design firms, and other strategic communications vendors on behalf of the Director of Communications
• Create high quality, compelling content, including content for social media, presentations, documents, and reports, that inspires key audiences
• Monitor policy developments and news related to program areas and stay abreast of developments in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors
• Ensure the Foundation’s identity and values are consistently reflected and implemented in all external and internal communications efforts and adhere to established style and branding guidelines
• Support program staff and grantee requests related to questions about how to communicate about the Foundation
• Take on communications projects and other initiatives as needed
• Support the efforts of the Director of Communications by researching, writing, designing, editing and proofreading customized proposals and other correspondence
• Execute special assignments at the request of the Director of Communications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Strong writing skills and ability to present compelling and persuasive information
• Knowledge and interest in current events, particularly in the Foundation’s issue areas and public interest communications
• Excellent interpersonal and collaborative team skills; ability to establish effective working relationships with a sensitivity and respect for diversity
• Excellent time and project management, budget management familiarity a plus
• Knowledge of the philanthropy field welcome, but not essential, although the expectation would be to develop expertise and knowledge of the sector
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience along with 5 years of work experience in issue-related and social-change communication, philanthropy, or a related field
• Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to details
• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and a passion and commitment to and passion for the Foundation’s mission
• Operations management experience in communications, marketing and/or related creative field
• Solid understanding of graphic design, video, web, social media, media, event and related creative processes and assets
• Demonstrated experience managing day-to-day operational and technical aspects of multiple creative projects while effectively meeting deadlines
• Experience acting as liaison to and advocate for clients, keeping them up to date on project statuses (including detailed information about activities, timelines, and deliverables) in a collaborative manner that achieves positive results
• Working proficiency with Asana, Adobe Creative Suite, social media platforms and Microsoft Office
• Ability to work through others in getting work done with a high level of quality and capable to successfully manage conflict
