Job Description:

~~United Way's Volunteer Engagement team connects people to meaningful volunteer opportunities and helps nonprofits and other organizations to engage volunteers effectively. Reporting to the Director, Volunteer Engagement, the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, reviews and approves nonprofits and volunteer opportunities on our volunteer website; assists the team in executing large-scale service events for thousands of volunteers, group volunteer projects, and workshops; and coordinates service grants, communication, and outreach efforts.


  • Performs logistical & technical support for United Way's large-scale mobilization of volunteers. Contributes to internal planning team for Day of Caring (12,000+ volunteers) and MLK, Jr Day (2,600+ volunteers), writes and distributes communications, approves volunteer projects, and approves contents of the event database. Provides customer service to help project leaders and teams navigate online volunteer tool, and ensure effective communication between teams and nonprofit partners.
  • Recruits and approves community organizations and volunteer opportunities for the volunteer connection website. Regularly gathers and evaluates site utilization and satisfaction data for our site and other volunteer activities, preparing reports as needed. Implements strategies to target organizations and/or volunteers that are under-represented in the web system or the focus of special United Way community initiatives.
  • Works with Volunteer Engagement Managers in coordinating volunteer management training and Project LEAD (our board training program for people of color). Coordinates graduation event, board fairs, and alumni events.
  • Helps deliver onsite and offsite workplace volunteer projects by organizing logistical details, identifying resources for supplies, entering volunteers in our system, and setting up projects and welcoming volunteers, as needed.
  • Promotes volunteerism and United Way in the community by delivering presentations, training on use of our tool, staffing volunteer fairs, and other resources.
  • Initiates and tracks small service grant process and distributes awards in a timely manner. Assists in identifying and scheduling sites for projects and training. Follows-up on all site-specific requirements and details, including invoices/payments, refreshments, confirmations, etc.
  • Helps monitor United Way’s internal volunteer engagement efforts, collaborating across teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Proven time management and organizational skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with a high level of accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills; demonstrated ability to adapt writing style to fit a variety of mediums (blogs, web, social media, newsletters) and audiences.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to resolve conflict and solve problems effectively and creatively.
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial equity; demonstrated ability to work with diverse individuals and collaborate across teams and with external partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative; identifies new ideas and approaches
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office and computer skills, including pulling data from complex databases.

The successful candidate will possess an Associate’s Degree or equivalent experience. At least 2 years’ experience coordinating complex projects/events and communications. Knowledge of effective volunteer management practices and processes preferred. Experience helping users navigate technology and/or coordinating volunteer projects a plus.

The annual recruitment range is $ 47,500 to $ 51,500, depending on experience.
