Real Change Homeless Empowerment

Real Change Homeless Empowerment Project was founded in 1994 to offer immediate employment options for the poor and homeless and challenge the structures that create poverty.  Real Change serves our vendors and unsheltered folks through three integrated approaches:
 
Vendor Program: Real Change meets vendors where they are, providing immediate income and training.  Additional opportunities include advanced sales trainings, elected vendor leadership positions, vendor internships, assistance with navigation and resource referral, access to the computer lab, and paid participation in the Homeless Speakers Bureau.
 
Real Change Newspaper: Real Change is North America’s leading street newspaper that provides work for about 800 homeless and low-income people annually, regularly wins awards for excellence, and focuses on issues of economic, social and racial justice.
 
Real Change Advocacy: Real Change leverages relationships between vendors and readers to increase opportunities for homeless and low-income people.
 

Vendor Program Manager - Job Description

The Program Manager is a full time, exempt position reporting to the Managing Director.  This leadership position supervises the vendor program and is responsible for meeting circulation goals and maintaining positive community relationships. 
 
Primary Roles and Responsibilities
 
Program Development (40%)
  • Identify and implement strategies to promote vendor success through increased circulation
  • Maintain positive vendor/community relationships through supportive enforcement of the Authorized Vendor Guidelines
  • Oversee updates to the policies and practices of the Vendor Program
  • Work with IT consultant to ensure that Vendor Database is up to date and meets departmental needs
 
Staff Supervision (40%)
  • Supervise staff
  • Coordinate staffing to ensure adequate coverage at all times
  • Facilitate weekly vendor staff meetings
  • Design and plan semi-annual vendor staff retreats with the goal of reviewing program goals, policies, vendor satisfaction, arrange staff trainings and program philosophy.
 
Program Outreach (15%)
  • Develop relationships with partner agencies who will serve as satellite distribution sites for RC when appropriate
  • Provide technical assistance to partner sites that will prepare them to sell Real Change
  • Help recruit potential vendors and conduct orientations as needed
  • Promote RC by talking to businesses, convening special events, and equipping vendors with tools for visibility and publicity
 
Other Administrative Duties (15%)
  • Create and manage annual department budget
  • Serve on the Real Change Leadership Team
  • Serve on Equity team and participate in Real Change’s ongoing work around race and class equity
  • Serve on at least one cross-departmental committee in addition to the Leadership Team
Minimum Qualifications include
-    Two + years of supervisory experience
-    Experience working with homeless and low income population
-    Commitment to social and economic justice
-    Commitment to ending institutional, structural and internalized racism
-    Excellent project management skills
-    Experience in conflict management and de-escalation
-    Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
-    Computer proficiency
-    Ability to work in a hectic, busy, sometimes loud workspace
 
Preferred Qualifications include
-    Direct service to homeless and low-income adults
-    Experience in sales
