POSITION PROFILE

Reports to: Executive Director

Function: The Director of External Relations oversees the 8-member fundraising and communications team, and leads the creation, implementation and evaluation of the agency’s 5-year private sector fundraising plan. This plan calls for 15% growth year over year, and the Director of External Relations has primary responsibility to ensure the goals are met. 

Hours: Fulltime, Monday – Friday. This position can work a flex schedule, typically hours worked are 8:00 am – 5:00pm, some early mornings/evenings and weekends may be required. 

Status: Exempt

Required Travel: Travel is generally limited to the King County area

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Director:

  • Leads the creation and successful implementation of an on-going private sector fundraising plan utilizing a variety of strategies including annual fund and major gifts, events, foundation grants, and corporate partnerships to reach goals.
  • Recruits, retains and supports professional external relations staff.  
  • Works closely with the Board of Directors to inspire confidence and effectiveness in board fundraising activities.

  • As a member of the agency leadership team, identifies opportunities and initiatives that advance external relations goals. 

  • Maintains a solid working knowledge of organization initiatives and services to advance these through external relations. 

  • Effectively communicates with all members of agency and with community contacts.

  • Establishes best practices for the team.

TECHNICAL FUNCTIONS

  • Proficiency in MS Windows (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and experience with CRM systems (preferably Salesforce).

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field

  • Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising practices and principles, 5 years increasingly progressive experience in fundraising of at least 1.3 million in the final year.

  • Experience in serving as an effective, contributing member of an organization’s senior management or leadership team. 

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in supervising professional fundraising staff. 

  • Outstanding ability to develop, lead and implement complex initiatives or projects. 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Experience in effectively seizing opportunities that may diverge from the original plan.

  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills, ability to balance between quick decisiveness and slower more thoughtful approaches. 

  • Ability to encourage a spirit of teamwork and inclusiveness among staff, board and other volunteers.

  • Three years of successful experience in coaching and managing key, high-level volunteers (Board committees, task forces) to be effective fundraisers.

  • Effectively developing and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships; ability to hear and incorporate others’ perspectives and build productive working relationships across sectors and interests.

  • Strong track record in exercising sound, timely judgment.

  • Competency in using data and creativity to inform decisions and achieve success in problem solving. 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge of Seattle-King County philanthropic community.

  • Demonstrated competency in a workflow management tool (e.g. Podio, Trello, Basecamp).

  • CFRE.
