THE ORGANIZATION
Music of Remembrance (MOR) is a non-profit organization founded in 1998 to remember the Holocaust through music. With concert performances, educational programs, recordings, and commissions of new works by some of today’s leading composers, MOR honors those of all backgrounds who found the strength to create even in the face of persecution, and those who had the courage to speak out against cruelty. We tell stories that communicate urgent lessons for today, and we look beyond the Holocaust itself to the experience of others who have been excluded or persecuted for their faith, ethnicity, gender or sexuality.
 
In addition to presenting historical music from the time of the Holocaust, MOR has commissioned and premiered over 30 new compositions by leading composers, telling stories that emphasize the relevance of the Holocaust’s lessons for today’s world.

Over its first two decades, MOR has become a firmly-established organization that is widely admired for its artistic excellence and for its commitment to a compelling mission.  MOR is based in Seattle, and its programs have primarily served the Pacific Northwest.  Since 2015, MOR has also performed annually in San Francisco, with the objective of establishing an ongoing presence there as well.  The organization’s website musicofremembrance.org provides extensive information about MOR’s musical and educational programming.  The website also contains a link to the most recent Annual Report, which includes a financial overview.

POSITION OVERVIEW
MOR seeks a creative, energetic professional to provide fundraising and communications support, with a clear focus on major gifts, donor cultivation and audience building. This individual will report to the Artistic Director, and work closely with the board to expand the organization’s donor and audience base.  As MOR’s only development and communications professional, he or she will shape fundraising strategies and methods to carry the organization into the future. This individual will have direct hands-on responsibility for cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major and annual donors.
 
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Working closely with the Artistic Director and the board, the Development/ Communications Manager will assume primary responsibility for MOR’s development and fundraising. Specific duties will include, but not be limited to, the following: 
  • Identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major and annual donors.
  • Planning and supporting the cultivation of prospective donors.
  • Identifying new opportunities for funding from individuals, foundations and corporations.  
  • Coordinating the planning and execution of benefit events and galas in collaboration with the board.
  • Developing and managing a responsive donor relations and relationship management program utilizing the techniques and strategies of donor-centered fundraising.
  • Helping board and committee members to develop fundraising and donor relations skills, and helping them to utilize effective techniques.
  • Preparing grant applications and reports.
  • Developing promotional materials.
  • Maintaining and expanding relationships with allied arts and community organizations.
  • Publicizing MOR events through use of e-mail, social media tools, and print and electronic news media.
 
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree, and experience in development with a focus on individual and major giving.  Development and communications experience with non-profit arts organizations would be especially valuable.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • An ability to embrace MOR’s mission and programs, and to articulate them convincingly as an ambassador of the organization.
  • High energy and self-starting capability as the organization’s only full-time development professional.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, and the ability to prioritize among multiple tasks.
  • Ability to use fundraising databases and donor relations software.
  • Knowledge of the philanthropic and arts communities in the Seattle and San Francisco areas is highly desirable.
