Job Description:

For 25 years, Youth in Focus has provided a high-quality, nationally recognized arts empowerment experience to underserved youth throughout the Seattle area. The students we serve represent a full spectrum of identities and backgrounds, including socio-economic, sexuality, and ethnicity, with the majority of our students being youth of color. The mission of Youth in Focus is to empower youth, through photography, to experience their world in new ways and to make positive choices for their lives.
Youth in Focus provides underserved youth with instruction, resources, and equipment they need to share their unique and personal stories through photography. Our students discover their creativity, identity, authentic voice, and sense of self-worth. Our supportive and inclusive community provides a sense of belonging and safety for youth from a variety of backgrounds, fostering positive connections between youth and adult teaching artists and mentors. All the while providing individualized attention and support.

The ideal Executive Director will be prepared to build upon an already strong program and lead the organization to new levels of financial security, community engagement, and program effectiveness. The Executive Director will be supported in this effort by staff members, teaching artists, dedicated volunteers, and a committed Board of Directors.
  • Leadership: Oversee all parts of Youth in Focus’ financial and programmatic goals while working closely with the Board of Directors to set the strategic vision for the organization, facilitating discussions to explore the evolution of Youth in Focus and photography as an industry and artform.  Recruit, motivate, supervise, and support a small team of committed staff, teaching artists, and professional volunteers. Manage the relationship and communication between the youth we serve, teaching artists, staff, and the Board of Directors.
  • Fundraising: Build and expand relationships with donors, particularly major donors and funders, by creating and implementing a strategic annual fundraising plan. Develop compelling grant proposals and help create and implement innovative fund-generating campaigns. Identify local and national grant and partnership opportunities that will build community and generate revenue to maintain and expand our programming. Use strong organizational skills to keep track of varying deadlines for grant application submission and reporting. Responsibly manage all budget, fiscal management and financial reporting details.
  • Community Engagement and Development: Work enthusiastically with the broader community to share the mission and message of Youth in Focus. Positively represent the organization in all environments, including public-facing events and media appearances. Build, strengthen and maintain intentional and strategic relationships with partners, supporters and donors while encouraging community involvement and continued growth of the organization.
  • Board Management and Recruitment: Actively participate in board meetings and executive committee meetings. Effectively drive activities to recruit, cultivate, and support a diverse pool of motivated, qualified candidates to serve on the Board of Directors while building meaningful relationships with individual members to better leverage their skills and talents for the benefit of the organization.
While no single candidate will possess all the qualifications below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:
  • Strong commitment to creating a safe and positive environment for a diverse population of youth, staff, and volunteers
  • Demonstrated fundraising and grant-writing abilities, particularly in growing an organization and/or diversifying funding streams, and experience serving as the public face of an organization with responsibility over marketing and social media
  • Commitment to providing appropriate and sensitive services by responding to people’s needs regardless of their social status, race, class or gender
  • An understanding and appreciation of art and aesthetics, ideally paired with an awareness of current trends in photography and imaging, and a willingness to participate in the evolution of Youth in Focus and photography as well
  • Strong track record of managing budgets and financial reporting, preferably in partnership with a board treasurer or executive committee
  • Excellent management skills and demonstrated ability applying situational leadership in working appropriately with key constituents, including students, parents, staff, board members, volunteers, funders, and community leaders
  • Ability to set organizational goals, achieve timely results, and delegate tasks as needed
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills. Active and participatory listening skills and ability to resolve conflicts and issues quickly and compassionately, supporting a collaborative and respectful office culture
  • Familiarity with programs such as Word, Excel, and QuickBooks. Experience with Salesforce a plus
  • Applicable professional experience required, including at least three years of non-profit management experience
The salary range for the position has been set at $65K - $80K plus benefits and is commensurate with experience. Please send nominations and/or applications including cover letter describing your interest and qualifications to jobs@youthinfocus.org.
