Is seeking a Chief Executive Officer

The Iditarod Trail Committee (ITC) is seeking candidates for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO).  This role is designed for a high achiever who is professionally persistent, strategic, solutions-oriented and outstanding at networking and relationship building. This role combines oversight of the administration of the nonprofit organization including the race itself, the strategic direction and plan for the organization, and building strong relationships with stakeholders, including mushers, sponsors, volunteers, communities and fans.
ITC is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with a mission to support the culture of dog mushing and preserve the historic Iditarod gold mining trail. Along with producing the “Last Great Race on Earth®, ITC is committed to be the model for exceptional animal care.
Working in close partnership with the Board of Directors, staff, and stakeholders, the CEO oversees all aspects of ITC’s business and finances including all event operations, human resources management, information technology, fundraising and public relations. The incoming CEO will be expected to develop policies and practices to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the organization through enhancing grant and foundation support, growing Iditarod’s sponsor base, and diversifying unrestricted income through innovative marketing strategies that capitalize on Iditarod’s Intellectual Property assets and social media reach. The new CEO will advance a vision of Iditarod that goes beyond the 1,000- mile event and positions the organization as a sustainable nonprofit that honors the organization’s mission, advocates for the highest standards of dog care, and respects the people and cultures of the communities with which it interacts.
Internally, the new CEO will cultivate and foster a strong culture of collaboration, learning, and innovation, rooted in Iditarod’s values of excellence, integrity, sportsmanship and tenacity. Externally, as chief spokesperson, the CEO will be expected to navigate and maintain mutually beneficial relationships that provide long-term benefits to Iditarod. Specifically, s/he will develop opportunities to expand the organizations brand profile through broad and diverse engagement with mushing organizations, corporate and nonprofit partners, advocacy groups, policymakers, the media and the public-at-large.

The ideal candidate has a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in senior leadership roles in sports marketing, event management and/or nonprofit organizations. A bachelor’s degree is preferred. We seek a CEO who demonstrates a leadership style that recognizes and supports the concepts of diversity, equity and inclusiveness in all relationships. S/he has exceptional relationship building skills, financial acumen, leadership qualities, and the vision to keep the Iditarod on the right trail. Dog lovers are encouraged to apply.
