To achieve our mission, we provide access to nutritious foods through our unique grocery-model food bank, community resource hub with financial and mail services that support self-sufficiency, and we advocate for food equity and justice. 

POSITION SUMMARY:
 
The Development & Communications Director will be a member of our small but mighty team.  They will drive the work of building philanthropic support for the mission of the Ballard Food Bank (BFB). This position will play the lead role in proactively planning and successfully executing a comprehensive fundraising program – including special events, major gift cultivation and solicitation, annual funding, and planned giving. The Director of Development will also provide leadership and management of the food bank’s Hope Beyond Hunger Capital Campaign. The fundraising program will position the organization for future growth, success, and long-term sustainability as we build out our initiatives to better serve our neighbors. The position leads and manages the Individual Giving & Events Manager and works in close partnership with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. The position actively engages with board members, donors, funders, organizational partners and other external constituencies, and plays a key role BFB’s management team. The incoming Director of Development will overlap with and receive transition support from the outgoing interim development team from The Ostara Group. 
 
Responsibilities
 
Fundraising
  • Lead a partnership with the Executive Director, Board of Directors and development team to devise and implement strategies and tactics to meet or exceed the $1M annual operating goal 
  • In partnership with the Executive Director & Campaign Counsel, lead and manage the multi-year $13.1M capital campaign 
  • Lead the development team in creating a strong, comprehensive development plan to significantly grow giving to BFB in all areas: events, annual fund, major gifts, corporate giving, grants, and planned-giving
  • Take ultimate responsibility for monitoring fundraising progress, evaluating results, and managing all team members to success in meeting their goals, metrics and desired outcomes
  • Manage and support the Executive Director in cultivating their portfolio of donors
  • Manage the Development Committee of the board in their role assisting the organization with fundraising and relationship development
  • Manage a portfolio of 50-75 major gift prospects for multi-year and single-year operating and campaign gifts, with capacity ranging from $1,000 to $25,000.
  • Lead the team in refining donor cultivation opportunities to grow relationships with major individual and corporate donors
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, hold and manage a portfolio of 5-10 corporations to generate contributions to and sponsorship of BFB events including Turkey Trot and Helpings for Hope
  • In collaboration with a contract grant writer, develop and manage relationships with private foundations, with the goal of developing catalytic or reliable sources of grant funding
 
Communications
  • Lead and manage a communications plan (public relations, social media and marketing) to advance strategic goals 
  • Ensure proactive collaboration with BFB development staff and communications counsel to create strong development communications materials, for capital campaign, program, and operating cases for support, annual fund letters, online fundraising communications, event speeches, videos, and more
  • In collaboration with the ED, build relationships in community through media 
  • Oversee implementation of printed and online agency publications including annual report, newsletter, website, and e‐newsletters 
 
Leadership & Management
  • Contribute to organization management and strategy-setting at the leadership level through weekly and other meetings.
  • Manage the Individual Giving & Events Manager, who is responsible for executing event strategy and logistics, as well as paper and electronic fundraising appeals, online crowdfunding and peer-to-peer giving campaigns, communications implementation, and database management. 
  • Contribute to financial management of BFB, including annual organization budgeting and goal-setting, development department budget monitoring, and participation in or presentation to meetings of the board of directors including various committees (e.g., Executive, Development, and Finance). 
  • Ensure departmental collaboration with Finance for reconciliation and auditing.
  • Be present and engaged at a variety of development and program events.
 
Qualifications
The Ballard Food Bank seeks a skilled, experienced, innovative philanthropy leader with 7-10 years of development or external relations experience in a nonprofit or public service environment to join our dynamic, accomplished leadership team.
