Position Description:
This position supports our community nutrition programming, focusing on senior meal food safety and nutrition education, and pre-K through 5th grade farm-to-table education. This position is part of the Community Education Team at Tilth Alliance, which engages youth, adults and families in hands-on classes, volunteer and other learning opportunities in Seattle and King County, around growing food, environmental stewardship, and cooking and sharing food.
Responsibilities for this position include: 1) working in collaboration with the Senior Meals Registered Dietitian in performing site visits, monitoring food safety, providing nutrition education and assisting with menu development, as well as promoting the use of more local fresh produce; and 2) leading Farm to Table classes and events at preschools and childcare centers funded by the Seattle Human Services department.
  • Senior Meal Program (60%):
    • Communicate effectively with program stakeholders and kitchen staff, including many who speak English as a second language
    • Schedule and perform site visits to senior congregate meal sites per month
    • Supervise meal sites to ensure that food quality, sanitation and safety standards are met
    • Certify that meals meet the nutrient requirements and assist programs in achieving compliance with the Washington State Senior Nutrition Program Standards for meals served
    • Conduct regular nutrition education activities with meal participants and program stakeholders
    • Provide “farm to table” education with meal sites that is culturally relevant and increases access to local produce for meal programs and participants
    • Monitor compliance with government contract requirements and assist in completion of Aging & Disability Services performance commitments as needed and assigned
  • Farm 2 Table (40%):
    • Schedule and perform site visits at preschools and childcare centers to assess site interest/need and collaboratively plan Farm to Table programming 
    • Lead Farm to Table nutrition education activities such as Mobile Classes, Taste of the Season and Family Events with pre-school and school age participants, site staff, and families
    • Provide “farm to table” education that is culturally relevant and increases access to local produce at snacks and meals
    • Attend monthly and quarterly Farm to Table meetings with Human Services Department and partner organizations.
    • Lesson plan development for Mobile Classes
Desired Qualifications and Attributes:
  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition
  • Registered Dietitian, registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (required)
  • Have vehicle and valid driver’s license and be able to transport self and teaching materials to locations throughout King County
  • Intermediate computer skills that include Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Washington State Food and Beverage Worker’s permit must be obtained prior to starting job
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to creatively respond to site needs and to develop unique approaches for promoting healthy, local food
  • Ability to write clear, concise reports
  • Extremely self-directed and able to work independently
  • Ability to be highly diplomatic, troubleshoot problems, and provide corrections and coaching to kitchen staff in a confident, encouraging and positive manner
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for and/or experience relating to and working with a wide variety of cultures
  • Ability to work with translators when providing nutrition education
  • Working knowledge and experience with group meals or food service, including essential food safety principles
  • Experience building capacity and relationships with diverse groups
  • Experience working in and providing nutrition education in a community nutrition setting
Benefits and Compensation:
This is a temporary, full-time, non-exempt position, through December 31, 2019, with the possibility of continued employment in 2020. Benefits include paid sick leave. This position will split office time between the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands and the Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford, and will require frequent travel to locations around Seattle. Hourly compensation range is $22 - $26.
